Portage South Accepts Invite to Labor Day Tournament in Pittsburgh

Butler, PA - The Portage South Black Squirrels were invited to play in the Butler Eagle County Wood Bat Tournament over Labor Day weekend.  It is a 11 team double elimination tournament starting on Friday, September 4th.  The game will be at Pullman Park in Butler, PA with a 6:30pm start time.  PS will face Debos out of Pennsylvania.

Six Black Squirrels Earn All-Tournament Team Honors in Wood Bat Classic

Akron, OH - After finishing as the runner up in the 2009 Wood Bat Classic Tournament, Portage South was honored with 6 players being named to the All-Tournament Team.  Dylan Wartluft was named the George Sisler MVP of the tournament.  Nic Carucci received the Phil Neikro Pitcher MVP honors for Portage South also.  Wartluft hit .588 for the tournament with 4 2B, a 3B, a HR and 10 RBI in 6 games.  Carucci was 1-0, allowing 0 R in 9 2/3 IP while striking out 10.  Jeff Speck, Mike Haney and Robert Paradise were named to the All-Tournament Team for their offensive contributions.  Mike Darrah was named to the team as a pitcher.

Portage South Accepts Bid to NEO Wood Bat Classic

Akron, OH - Portage South Black Squirrels had the opportunity to extend the season with a bid to the Northeast Ohio Wood Bat Classic.  PS is among 4 Greater Akron AA teams that are participating in the 12 team field.  The tournament consists of 3 games in pool play with the top 8 teams advancing to a single elimination tournament.  Portage South is in a pool with Kent Knights of the Akron Roy Hobbs League, Trumbull Merchants of the Warren AA League and the Northern Ohio Hurricanes, the Greater Akron AA League Tournament Runner-up.  PS plays the Kent Knights on Thursday, August 6th in a 9:00pm contest at Patterson Park in Akron.  On Friday, the Black Squirrels will play the Northern Ohio Hurricanes at 6:30pm.  This game will also be at Patterson Park.  The last game in pool play will be on Saturday at 10:00am against the Trumbull Merchants with the game being held at the Ballpark in Hudson.

Portage South Draws Team Diesel in First Round

Brimfield, OH - On Saturday, July 18th the Greater Akron AA Baseball League held the League Tournament drawing.  Portage South had the 6th selection in the drawing and will play Team Diesel (#5 Seed) at Field HS on Monday, July 20th.  The game will begin at 6:30pm.  In the first game of the tournament, Northern Ohio Hurricanes played Canton Crew at Field HS.  The Hurricanes won 10-1 and will face #1 Seed, Canton-Akron Legend on Monday at Hudson HS in the 9:00pm game.  Other first round games are:  Alliance White Physical Therapy vs. Sharon Center Cox Painting at Hudson HS (6:30pm) and Akron Lasiks vs. Randolph Reds at Pickle Road (7:00pm).

2009 League Tournament Results

Final Week of Regular Season Players of the Week Announced

Portage South Black Squirrels announced the Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week for July 6th - July 12th.  PS played three games over that week, earning 1 win.  The Offensive Player of the Week was First Baseman, Greg Boyd.  Rob Gipson earned the Pitcher of the Week honors.

Boyd went 5-8 (.625) with a double, 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.  He was 3-3 with 3 RBI against the Randolph Reds on July 16th.

Gipson pitched 5 1/3 innings of hitless baseball against Alliance allowing 0 earned runs, but did take the loss.

Week 7 Portage South Players of the Week

Portage South Black Squirrels announced the Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week for July 6th - July 12th.  PS played four games over that week, earning 1 win.  The Offensive Player of the Week was Outfielder, Danny Campfield.  Mike Darrah earned the Pitcher of the Week honors.

Campfield went 8-13 (.615) with 3 doubles, 3 runs batted in and 3 runs scored.  He was 3-4 with a double against the Tallmadge Blaze on 7/7/09.

Darrah was 1-0 with a win over Sharon Center Cox Painting.  He struck out 6 and allowed only 2 earned runs in his appearance.

Week Six PS Players of the Week Selected

Portage South Black Squirrels announced the Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 29th - July 5th.  PS played two games over that week, earning 2 wins.  The Offensive Player of the Week was Outfielder, Nick Dean.  Eric Schaffer earned the Pitcher of the Week honors.

Dean went 3-4 with a double, a run batted in and 2 runs scored against the Canton Crew.  He missed the second game of the week due to a league obligation.

Schaffer was 1-0 with a win over the Canton Crew in relief.  He struck out 2 and allowed only 1 hit in his appearance.

7 Black Squirrels Selected to the AA All Star Game

Suffield, OH - The roster were announced for the 2009 Greater Akron AA Baseball Inter-league All Star game this week.  Seven players from Portage South were selected.  Ryan Adams, Mike Price and Eric Schaffer were chosen as pitchers.  Danny Campfield, Kevin Haley, Jimmy Jamieson and Tyler Thomas were taken as position players.

Campfield (1st All Star selection) is hitting .440 in the league with 5 2B, a 3B and 12 RBI.  Haley (3rd selection) is hitting .340 with 16 hits and 8 RBI.  Jamieson (3rd) is currently second in the league in hitting at .472 with 25 hits, 12 R and 10 RBI.  Thomas (1st) has 15 hits, 11 R and 11 RBI in league play.

Adams (1st) is 2-2 with a 2.85 ERA.  He has struck out 30 batters in 19 1/3 innings.  Price (3rd) is 4-3 with a 1.46 ERA.  He leads the team in innings with 33 1/3.  Schaffer (1st) is 1-0 and has a 0.00 ERA in league play.

Phil Smith was also selected, but will be unable to attend the game.

Portage South Players of the Week Announced for Week 5

Portage South Black Squirrels announced the Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 22nd - June 28th.  PS played just two games over that week, winning them both.  The Offensive Player of the Week was Second baseman, Kevin Haley.  Jesse Michel earned the Pitcher of the Week honors.

Haley was 5-7 (.714) with a double, 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.  Haley was 2-3 in each of the games this week.  He had a double and 2 RBI against the Alumni team.

Michel was 1-0, allowing 5 hits in a complete game while striking out 8 against Little Chicago Bistro of the Canton AA League.

Week 4 PS Players of the Week Were Announced

Portage South Black Squirrels announced the Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 15th - June 21st.  PS played five games over that week, earning 2 wins and 3 losses.  The Offensive Player of the Week was Outfielder, Mike Darrah.  Ryan Adams earned the Pitcher of the Week honors.

Darrah was 5-7 (.714) with a double, 4 runs scored and 3 runs batted in.  He also stole 3 bases during the week.  Darrah was 4-4 with a double, 4 runs scored, 3 stolen bases and 2 runs batted in against Champion Marlins from the Warren AA League.

Adams was 1-0, allowing 3 hits in 5 innings pitched while striking out 6.  He combined on a shutout against the Northern Ohio Hurricanes when he recorded his victory.  Adams leads the PS pitching staff with 33 strikeouts on the year.

PS Players of the Week Selected for Week 3

Portage South Black Squirrels announced the Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 8th- June 14th.  PS played six games over that week, earning 1 win and 5 losses.  The Offensive Player of the Week was Third Baseman, Spencer Payne.  Mike Price earned the Pitcher of the Week honors.

Payne hit .364 (4-11) for the week, driving in 3 runs and stealing 2 bases.  He went 3-5 with 2 RBI in the doubleheader with the Canton-Akron Legend.

Price was 1-0, allowing 3 hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched while striking out 4 batters.  He made 2 appearances for the week, including a 4 inning relief appearance against Abbott Electric to pick up the win.

Smith and Stewart Named PS Players of the Week

Portage South Black Squirrels announced the Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 1st - June 7th.  PS played five games over that week, earning 3 wins and 2 losses.  The Offensive Player of the Week was Catcher/First Baseman, Phil Smith.  Kyle Stewart earned the Pitcher of the Week honors.

Smith went 4-15 in five games for the week, including 2 homeruns, 3 runs scored and 3 runs batted in.  He began the week by hitting a homerun to tie the game against Randolph in a 7-1 win over the 2007 Champs.  Smith followed that up with an eventual game-winning homerun against Alliance for the 4-3 victory.

Stewart got his first league start of the season against the Tallmadge Blaze.  He threw four scoreless innings and allowed only 2 hits.  Stewart also struck out 8 batters in the victory over Tallmadge.

Portage South Players of the Week Announced for Week 1

Portage South Black Squirrels announced the Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week for May 25th - May 31st.  PS played five games over that week, earning 3 wins and 2 losses.  The Offensive Player of the Week was Outfielder, Danny Campfield.  Mike Price earned the first Pitcher of the Week honors.

Campfield played in all five games, hitting .571 (8-14) with 2 doubles, 5 runs scored and 4 runs batted in.  He opened the season with a 3-3 effort against the Canton Crew with a double and 2 RBI.  In a win over Team Diesel, Campfield again went 3-3 with a double, a RBI and a stolen base.

Price threw a complete game in the season opener against the Canton Crew.  He allowed only 1 unearned run and 5 hits over 5 innings, while striking out 6 batters in the 13-1 victory.

Portage South's Matt Uy Earns OAC All-Academic Honors

Matt UyAUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Three members of the Capital University baseball team were recognized on the Ohio Athletic Conference All-Academic Team on Wednesday following voting by the OAC's faculty athletics representatives. Juniors Justin Stegman and Matt Uy were First Team picks while sophomore Steven Veenstra was an Honorable Mention selection.

To be eligible for the OAC All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA, be a starter or key reserve and be in at least his second year of participation in the sport.

Uy, a pitcher out of Akron North High School, carries a 3.76 GPA as a biology/pre-med major. The lefty had a 2-4 record with a 6.52 ERA this season including two complete game performances. He tallied 15 strikeouts in 48.1 innings pitched over his 11 appearances. Uy was inducted in the National Student Athlete Honor Society (Chi Alpha Sigma) earlier this spring.

Capital finished the 2009 season ninth in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with a 12-26 overall record and a 4-14 mark in conference play. CU suffered eight of its 26 losses by two runs or less while boasting a roster that consisted of just four seniors and three juniors.

2009 PS Wall of Fame Class of 2009 Announced

Portage South Baseball announced the Wall of Fame Class of 2009 at the beginning of May and four former players were honored with being named to the Wall.  Ralph Bloom, Scott Hindel, Chad Markert and Randy Wooten were all chosen by the Wall of Fame committee after carefully reviewing all eliglble players.  They will be recognized in a ceremony, along with the four players from the class of 2008, at the Portage South Reverse Raffle on June 27th.

Ralph Bloom began his career with PS in 2000.  He played his high school baseball at Hudson and his college baseball at Walsh University.  Bloom has the career record for complete games and innings pitched for PS.  He also is in the top five all time in wins, strikeouts and ERA.  Bloom was a two time All-Star in his four year career with Portage South, starting both All-Star games on the mound.  He was also named the PS Cy Young in 2000 and 2001.
Scott Hindel was a member of the original team in 1997.  He played baseball at Field High School and Malone College.  Hindel played in 95 games in his four year career with PS.  He ended his career with a .307 batting average and is in the top ten all time in homeruns and stolen bases.
Chad Markert started in 1998 and pitched 5 seasons for Portage South.  Markert played at Lake High School in Hartville and Mount Union College.  He was named the PS Cy Young in 1999.  Markert holds season records for appearances and saves.  He also is among the career leaders in complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts for PS.

Randy Wooten began his career in 1999 with PS.  He played his high school baseball at Bishop Hartley in Columbus and some college at Akron and Walsh.  Wooten holds season records for batting average, stolen bases and walks.  He also holds the career records for runs, hits, stolen bases and walks.  Wooten was a four time All-Star and team MVP in 2002.  He won the PS Stan Musial Award in 2003 and 2004.  For his career, Wooten hit .391 and ranks in the top ten in almost every offensive category.

2009 Portage South Baseball Alumni Game

The Portage South Baseball Team would like to invite alumni players back for the 1st annual PS Alumni Baseball Game scheduled for Saturday, June 27th at Field High School.

Bragging rights are on the line. This is NOT an exhibition game. This will be a legitimate game with umpires and statistics will be kept. The game will follow 2009 Greater Akron AA League rules and consist of 7 innings or until the 2:15 hour time limit has been met. A 15-minute infield/outfield warm-up will begin for the alumni squad promptly at 11:00am followed by an infield/outfield warm-up by the current squad at 11:15am.

At the conclusion of the game, a Player of the Game will be announced and presented with a commemorative trophy later that evening at our team fundraiser hosted by the Water Street Tavern.

Please RSVP by May 31st so that we have enough time to order shirts to be worn by the alumni for the game. Please remember to indicate your shirt size when you RSVP.

7th Annual Reverse Raffle

The 2009 Portage South Baseball Team will be hosting their annual team fundraiser on Saturday June 27th, 2009 at the Water Street Tavern in Kent, OH. The annual cost for team affiliation in the Greater Akron AA League is $3,200.00 per team. Membership to the Greater Akron AA includes umpires fees, field rental, team insurance, tournament expenses, and baseballs for games. This does not include any team fees that we incur during the season - additional umpire expenses for extra games, new hats, etc. To offset some of these costs, PS will be hosting a reverse raffle with a grand prize of $500.00 cash. Tickets for the reverse raffle are $30 per person.

Portage South Baseball Fundraiser 

Since the current Portage South uniforms are going to be 6 years old this year, the team is going to be having an additional fundraiser to purchase new uniforms for the 2009 season. We are hoping to replicate the gray Cleveland Indians road uniforms, with Black Squirrels or Portage South across the front of the jerseys (apprx. $60 each). Our ultimate goal is to raise $2,300.00. In order to purchase only the jerseys, PS will need to raise an additional $1,380.00 this year. If we are able to meet our goal, we will purchase pants to match.

The drawing will be held at the Reverse Raffle on June 27th.  Cash prizes will be awarded to the first 10 tickets drawn at the Reverse Raffle.  You do not need to be present to win.

2009 PS Wall of Fame Ballot

The players listed below have met the minimum eligibility requirements to be considered a candidate for induction into the 2009 PS Wall of Fame class. Voting will take place over the next couple of months and PS Baseball management will contact the winners individually and recognize them for their accomplishments at the Portage South Annual Reverse Raffle.  The 2008 class will be honored along with the 2009 class.

Inaugural PS Wall of Fame Class Announced

At the end of the 2008 Portage South baseball season, PS management started discussions on a Wall of Fame to honor past Black Squirrels.  Criteria for eligibility were set at this meeting.  To be considered, a PS player must have played 100 games or 4 years or pitched 100 innings.  The maximum number of inductees per year is set at six.  After weeks of reviewing player stats and accomplishments from the first 12 years of Portage South Baseball, the inaugural class has been selected.  The 2008 PS Wall of Famers are:  Ryan Border, Jason Gorham, Nate Shahan and John Stack.  A ceremony will be held at the Portage South Annual Reverse Raffle.

Ryan Border was a member of the original team in 1997.  He played his high school baseball at Field and was with PS from 1997 through 2003.  He returned to the team in 2005 for a season and again in 2007.  Border ended his Portage South career as the all-time leader in games, at bats and triples.  He hit .306 for his career and is in the top five on the career list for runs, hits, doubles, homeruns, RBIs and stolen bases.

Jason Gorham was a member of the original team in 1997.  Gorham played at Southeast High School and Walsh University.  His PS playing career was from 1997-2004.  He played in 149 games (6th) and hit .350 for Portage South.  He won the team batting title in 2000.  Gorham also represented the NEO Class A League All-Stars against the Canton Class A All-Stars in 2001.  He still ranks in the top ten in average, hits, runs, RBIs, stolen bases and walks.

Nate Shahan was a member of the original team in 1997.  Shahan also played his high school baseball at Field.  He played with PS from 1997 through 2000 and returned for a season in 2002.  Nate finished his career with PS hitting .394, which is now second on the all-time list.  He still leads the career list in RBIs with 111.  Shahan was co-MVP and batting champion for Portage South in 1997 and won both the MVP and Cy Young awards in 1998.  He was selected to the 2002 All-Star Team.

John Stack was a member of the original team in 1997.  Stack played his high school baseball at Rootstown and college at Mount Union.  He was the co-MVP and Cy Young of the 1997 Portage South team.  Stack owns a .353 lifetime average and set a record with 3 homeruns and 8 RBIs in a game during the 1998 season.  He also is the holder of the season stolen base record with 25 in 1998.  Stack is still ranked second all-time in homeruns and stolen bases.

2008 Greater Akron AA Baseball League Award Winners Announced

The Greater Akron AA Baseball League announced the 2008 award winners and Portage South players were among the honored.  The Frank Garcia MVP award was given to Sam Crea of Sharon Center Cox Painting.  Crea led the league in average (.508), hits (40) and stolen bases (30).  Matt Brumit of the Canton-Akron Legend took home the Dave Young Pitcher of the Year Award.  Brumit finished the season 5-0 with a 0.00 ERA.  He also led the league in strikeouts with 53 in 30 2/3 innings pitched.  Portage South's newcomer, Jeff Speck, won the Don Lombardi Rookie of the Year.  This was the second straight Black Squirrel to bring home the award, Jimmy Jamieson was the 2007 winner.  Speck hit .421 with 24 hits and 8 RBIs in his rookie campaign.  He received 6 of the nine votes for the award.

The 2008 All-League Teams were also announced.  Rob Gipson earned 1st Team All-League honors as a pitcher.  Kevin Haley (2B), Jimmy Jamieson (SS), Jesse Michel (OF) and  Jeff Speck (DH) were selected to the 2nd Team.  Portage South also had 4 members (Nick Dean, Brandon Fedor, Mike Price and Matt Uy) named Honorable Mention.

Portage South Team Awards

With the 2008 season coming to end, Portage South announces the annual team awards.  The PS MVP was presented to Jimmy Jamieson for the second consecutive year.  Jamieson led Portage South in most offensive categories, including hits (50), runs scored (24), doubles (10) and runs batted in (30).  He also led PS in batting with a .446 average, winning the Stan Musial Batting Title.  The team's Cy Young was awarded to Rob Gipson.  Gip went 4-2 with a 0.37 ERA in 37 2/3 innings pitched.  He also struck out 36 batters.  The fourth and final award given out is known as "The Herb".  The 2008 Herb went to Danny Campfield.

Portage South Well Represented in All-Star Game

The annual Greater Akron AA inter-league All-Star Game was held on July 7th at Sisler Field in Akron and 8 Portage South Black Squirrels were honored with selections to the Suburban Division team.  Rob Gipson started on the mound for the Suburban All-Stars and threw 2 scoreless innings, striking out four.  Jesse Michel, Jimmy Jamieson, Brandon Parsons and Jeff Speck were chosen as starters, while Brandon Fedor, Nick Dean and Mike Price were selected as reserves.  Michel went 3-5 with a double and 3 runs scored.  Jamieson was 2-5 with 2 runs batted in.  The game was decided in the ninth inning when the Metro Division All-Stars pushed across 3 runs to take the lead 15-14.  The Suburban Division was unable to score in the bottom half of the inning.  Casey Jirsa went 3-4 with a double and 2 RBIs for the Metro All-Stars to earned the MVP.

2008 Regular Season

The 2008 season started with the 2007 Champion Randolph Reds.  PS lost a close one 3-1, but rebounded to take two from one of the new team's, Team Diesel.  Portage South finished the first week of the season with a loss to the eventual City Division Champs, Canton-Akron Legend.  Jesse Michel went 7-14 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs to earn PS Player of the Week honors.  Rob Gipson and Jimmy Jamieson also had good offensive weeks for the Black Squirrels.  Gipson was 6-10 with a double and triple, while Jamieson hit 5-12 with a double and 3 RBI.  Kevin Haley threw 5 innings, allowing 3 runs and striking out 7, in a victory over Team Diesel.  Haley was named PS Pitcher of the Week.  Portage South went undefeated during week two of the season, with two victories over the Turf Guys and a 3-2 win over Randolph.  Kevin Haley went 4-7 with a double and 3 RBI to win Player of the Week.  Brandon Parsons went 4-9 with a triple and 3 RBIs and Jimmy Jamieson was 5-12 with 3 runs scored.  Rob Gipson threw the fifth no-hitter in PS history against the Turf Guys.  He struck out 12 and was one walk away from a perfect game.  Gipson was named Pitcher of the Week.  The Akron Lasiks broke the PS 3-game winning streak with a doubleheader sweep.  The Black Squirrels bounced back to beat Randolph and the Tallmadge Blaze.  Brandon Parsons was 4-11 with 2 triples and 4 RBIs.  Parsons was Player of the Week.  Jimmy Jamieson and Jeff Speck each had 5 hits for the week.  Jamieson drove in 5 runs, while Speck had 3 RBIs.  Mike Price allowed only 1 run and struck out 7 in a complete game victory to earn Pitcher of the Week.  Portage South won their first game of week four against the Tallmadge Blaze, but dropped the next two games against Randolph and Alliance.  Brandon Fedor had 6 hits in 8 at bats, with a double and 3 RBIs, to earn Player of the Week honors.  Rob Gipson won his second Pitcher of the Week, allowing just one hit and no runs in 5 innings of work for a victory.  With the victory over the Tallmadge Blaze to start week 5 of the season, PS brought their record 10-6 at the All-Star Break.  The Black Squirrels won three more games this week and added a tie against Alliance.  Jimmy Jamieson was 7-12 with 4 runs and 4 RBIs.  He was the Player of the Week.  Eric Jones went 1-0 with 7 strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings pitched.  Portage South was able to win 2 of 3 games in week six of the season.  PS beat the Turf Guys and Randolph, but lost 1-0 to Alliance.  Nick Dean hit .500 with 4 runs and 2 RBIs to win Player of the Week.  Matt Uy threw a complete game victory, allowing only 1 earned run to grab Pitcher of the Week.  The last week of the season, Portage South went 2-4 to end the season at 15-11-1.  Jeff Speck was 8-15 with a double and 2 RBIs for Player of the Week.  Jesse Michel was 6-19 with 2 doubles.  Nick Dean went 6 innings in a victory to earn Pitcher of the Week.

2008 League Tournament

Portage South ended the regular season with a 15-11-1 record and earned the 5 seed in the tournament.  Portage South drew the defending champions, Randolph Reds in the first round.  Rob Gipson threw 5 1/3 innings allowing just one hit and one run for the victory.  Mike Price went 1 2/3 innings in relief for the save.  Kevin Haley went 2-3 with an RBI for the Black Squirrels.  PS would then play the #1 seed, Canton-Akron Legend.  Jesse Michel allowed only 5 hits and 2 runs in a complete game victory.  Jimmy Jamieson led the offensive attack with 3 hits and a RBI.  Adam Whiting and Danny Campfield also had 2 hits apiece.  Portage South's next opponent would be the Akron Lasiks in the winner's bracket final.  PS advanced to the championship game with a 3-2 win over the Lasiks.  Mike Price threw a complete game with 9 strikeouts.  The Black Squirrels would play the Akron Lasiks again for the championship after they were able to win the consolation bracket.  The Lasiks, behind Ryan Petrusky, won two straight games and the title.

Portage South played the BrewCrew from the Roy Hobbs League in the first game of pool play at the Buckeye 18+ State Tournament.  PS had a 3-2 lead going into the fifth, but allowed 3 runs in the inning.  The Squirrels lost 7-3.  Jimmy Jamieson, Danny Campfield and Jeff Speck all had 2 hits for PS.  Game two had PS playing the Fairview Marlins.  Portage South scored 6 runs in the sixth innings and won 11-1.  Rob Gipson threw 6 scoreless innings for the victory.  Eric Jones and Jason Preising had 3 hits each to lead PS.  In the final game of pool play, Portage South faced Warren Flex Strut.  PS grabbed an early 5-0 lead and held on to win 10-5.  Kevin Haley went 7 innings on the mound for the victory.  Jimmy Jamieson had 4 hits with a triple and 2 RBI.  With the 2-1 record, the Black Squirrels received the #3 seed in the playoff.  PS had to face Sharon Center Cox Painting in the playoff.  Portage South got to a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single by Jeff Speck.  Speck was 3-4 in the game.  Sharon came right back in the second with a run to tie the game and they took the lead 5-2 after 4 innings.  PS was unable to get back on top and lost 6-3 to finish the season 20-15-1.
