Portage South Finishes Season as Wood Bat Classic Semifinalist
Portage South accepted bid to play in the Wood Bat Classic for the second straight season looking
to improve on the 2009 runner-up finish. In pool play, PS would face the defending champ, Hudson Explorers, Metro Ice
Brewers from the Warren AA League and the Kent Knights from Roy Hobbs.
In
game one of pool play, Portage South faced the Hudson Explorers at the Ballpark in Hudson. PS would score first with
3 runs in the third inning. Ron Spears drew a bases loaded walk for the first run. Mike
Darrah singled to score another Black Squirrel and Dylan Wartluft scored on a wild pitch.
Hudson came back in the bottom of the inning with 2 runs of their own to cut the lead to one. In the fifth, Hudson would
tack on another run to tie the game at 3-3. They would play 8 innings and remained tied as the game was called due to
time limit rules. Walt Samson threw 7 innings allowing just 2 earned runs in a no decision. Kevin
Haley was 2-3 to lead the Portage South offense.
In game 2 of pool
play, Portage South would travel to Warren to face the Metro Ice Brewers. PS got a run in the second when Kevin
Haley walked and scored on a Mike Haney single. The Brewers scored a run in the fourth to
tie the game at 1-1. The game would remain 1-1 through 9 innings when the game was once again called due to time limit
rules. Nick Jones threw all 9 innings for Portage South, striking out 10 and allowing just 4 hits.
Dylan Wartluft was 2-4 with a double.
In the final game
of pool play, Portage South played host to the Kent Knights at Sisler Field. PS scored all 3 of their runs in the fourth
inning. Kevin Yelinek singled to score Robert Paradise. Walt Samson
followed with a walk and Jimmy Jamieson doubled to score both Yelinek and Samson. Matt Uy
tossed a 3-hit shutout and Portage South finished pool play with a 1-0-2 record, good enough for the 4th seed in the tournament.
In tournament play, Portage South would face the Roy Hobbs champion, Akron Horned Frogs.
The Horned Frogs scored first with a run in the third. PS came back with 2 runs in the fifth. Kevin Yelinek
walked followed by Mike Haney reaching after being hit by a pitch. Jimmy Jamieson
hit a 2-out double that scored both runners. Akron would score another run in the top of the 6th to tie the game, but
Portage South came right back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Mike Darrah
singled and scored on Anthony D'Attoma's single. Darrah threw 6.2 innings for the
win. Jesse Michel came in and struck the last batter for the save. D'Attoma was 3-3 with a RBI.
Portage South would face the Ohio Titans in the semifinal. Mike Haney
was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Dylan Wartluft in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.
The Titans score 1 in the bottom of the second to tie the game, but PS scored another run in the top of the third. Danny
Campfield singled followed by a Haney single. Kevin Haley then doubled to score Campfield.
The Titans would score 3 in the bottom of the third and another 3 runs in the fourth to put the game away. PS lost 8-2
to end the season with a 25-12-2 record. Jimmy Jamieson and Campfield had 2 hits each to lead the Black
Squirrels.

Portage South Plays Canton Stallions in AABC
With their second place finish in the AA League Tournament, Portage South earned a bid to the
AABC Regional Tournament in Canton. They would play the Canton Stallions in a Best-of-Three Series to determine the
East Region representative at the AABC World Series in Texas. In game one of the series, Matt DeSalvo
tossed a no hitter against PS and blanked them 6-0. Ryan Baechel (B & B All Stars in the regular
season) was 3-4 with a 2B, HR and 2 RBI.
In the second game of the
series, Portage South scored first with a RBI single by Kevin Brown. The Stallions tied it in the fourth,
but PS took the lead back in the fifth with another RBI single by Brown. Canton scored in the sixth to tie the game
again and took the lead in the eighth 3-2. Portage South was able to get a run in the ninth to force extra innings.
Danny Campfield doubled and scored on a RBI single by Anthony D'Attoma. Both teams
would score 2 runs in the 10th. In the 13th, Ryan Baechel of the Stallions homered for the win 6-5.
The win advanced the Canton Stallions to Texas for the World Series.
Portage South Finishes Second in the League Tournament
After receiving a first round bye, Portage South would play B & B All Stars.
B & B would score a run in the third inning. PS came right back with a run in the fourth, B & B scored a run
in the fifth and 2 more in the sixth to take the lead for good. Brian Dougherty allowed just one run
on 2 hits. Tim Kiernan was 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Dylan Wartluft had
a hit and scored the only run for Portage South.
Portage South and Team
Diesel were matched up in the late game of the consolation bracket. PS scored 4 runs in the first and held a 4-0 lead
as the game was suspended for rain in the top of the 5th inning. It was resumed on Saturday with Portage South able
to hold for the 4-1 victory. Ron Spears and Mike Darrah each had 2 hits for PS.
Kevin Haley also had a double and 2 RBIs. Darrah got the win with Eric Schaffer picking
up the save.
Portage South Black Squirrels would meet Akron Lasiks in the
consolation semifinal. PS would score 4 runs in the top of the first. The Lasiks chipped away at the lead by scoring
a run in each of the first 3 innings. Akron took the lead in the fourth with a 2 run inning, then tacked on 2 more runs
in the fifth. Portage South would get one run back in the sixth, but still trailed by 2 entering the 7th inning.
PS would score 3 to take the lead. The Lasiks were able to get a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
In the 8th, Portage South would score a run and hold the Lasiks off for the win. Kevin Haley was 1-3
with 3 RBI to lead PS. Walt Samson threw 4 innings of relief for the win.
After 2 days of rain, the consolation final was played between B & B All Stars and Portage South. B &
B All Stars got on the board first with 2 runs in the second inning. PS came right back with 2 runs in the top of the
third. The score would remain tied until Portage South scored a run on a bases loaded walk for the victory. Ron
Spears and Walt Samson were 2-3 to lead the PS offense. Mike Darrah threw
a complete game for the win, striking out five.
The 2010 Greater Akron AA
League Tournament Championship game had #2 Alliance White Physical Therapy against #3 Portage South Black Squirrels.
Alliance score first with a run in the bottom of the second. Josh White singled to start the inning
and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. White would score on a Scott Saylor single. Alliance
would get 4 more runs in the third. Zac Barson was hit by a pitch and scored on a White double.
White scored on a Grant Sevek single. Sevek would steal second and score on Kyle Green's
single. Saylor doubled to score Green. WPT would add another run in the fourth when Ryan Armstrong
scored on a sacrifice fly by Zac Barson. Portage South finally got on the board in the sixth. Sam Crea
was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Mike Darrah's single. Alliance would
add 2 more insurance runs in the sixth. Craig Knott and Zach Messer had back-to-back
singles to start the inning. Knott would score on a bases loaded walk to White and Messer came home on a RBI groundout
by Sevek. Mike Grady threw a complete game for his second win of the tournament, allowing just one
run on four hits and struck out 8. White and Knott each had 3 hits for the Alliance offense.

Portage South Ends the Regular Season with 9 Straight Wins
Down 5 games to Alliance in the battle for the Suburban Division title with a week to play,
Portage South needed to win all their games and get some help to win the division. Portage South did their part by winning
all 9 games on their schedule to finish the season 20-7. Alliance went 5-3 and won the division by 1.5 games, but
only 1 point in the league's point system.
Portage South beat B & B
All Stars 13-7 in the first game after the All Star game. They then took 2 games from the Northern Ohio Hurricanes 3-2
and 4-2. PS had to score 3 runs in the final 2 innings in game one with the Hurricanes to win, the last run coming on
a Jesse Michel walkoff single. The Black Squirrels made it 4 straight by holding off a late rally in
an 11-9 win over the Canton Crew.
Portage South would win a battle with
Metro Division leader, Akron Lasiks, 4-2. Sam Crea lead off the game with a solo homerun. PS
increased the lead to 3-0 with 2 runs in the third. Kevin Haley doubled and scored on a Dylan
Wartluft double. Wartluft would score on a Ron Spears single. The Lasiks would get 2
runs in the fifth to make 3-2. Portage South would get an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a homerun by Walt
Samson. Mike Price threw 6 solid innings for the win, allowing just 5 hits. Matt
Uy threw a scoreless seventh for the save. Samson and Spears went 2-3 each to lead the offense.
PS would then pick up a forfeit win over B & B All Stars, then shutout Team Diesel 10-0.
Matt Uy allowed 2 hits in the complete game win over Team Diesel. Mike Darrah was
3-4 with 3 RBI. Jesse Michel also had 3 hits for the Black Squirrels. Portage South then won
a 3-team doubleheader. They beat Canton Crew 4-3 with another come from behind win. Jimmy Jamieson
was 3-3 with a RBI. PS then beat Akron Dreams 17-6. Dylan Wartluft was 3-3 with 5 RBI.
Portage South Loses Last Game Before All Star Break
Alliance White PT looked to increase their division lead over Portage South in the final game
before the All Star Break. Alliance scored 3 runs in the first. PS would get a run back in the bottom of the first.
Sam Crea would walk, advance to second on a wild pitch, steal third and score on a Kevin Yelinek
single. This is all the Black Squirrels offense would produce and Alliance won 3-1. Walt Samson
threw a complete game in the loss.

Portage South Takes 2 of 3 from the Dreams
Portage South was set to play the Akron Dreams in a doubleheader on Sunday followed by a game
on Tuesday. In game one of the doubleheader, the Dreams got a run in the first. PS would score a run in the second
when Eric Jones singled and scored on a Kevin Haley double. The Black Squirrels would
get 3 more runs in the third to take the lead for good. Kevin Yelinek singled, Jimmy Jamieson
was hit by a pitch and Jones walked to load the bases. Haley walked to score Yelinek and Aaron Rauber
singled to score Jamieson and Jones. PS would win 6-3. Mike Darrah earned the complete game victory,
striking out 8. Haley was 2-2 with 2 RBIs.
In game two, Portage South
jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Ron Spears and Eric Jones had RBI singles and
Mike Darrah knocked in the third run with a sacrifice fly. PS blew the game open in the fifth with
a 7 run outburst. Spears and Jesse Michel had back-to-back RBI doubles and three batters later, Kevin
Haley plated 2 runs with a double of his own. Mike Price would also have a RBI single in the
inning. In the sixth, Jason Preising had a bases clearing double and PS would win 14-1. Spears
would lead the Portage South attack with 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Michel allowed just 1 hit and 1 run in 5 innings of work
for the win.
On Tuesday, the Akron Dreams were trying to avoid the 3 game
sweep. Portage South would score a run in the second on a bases loaded walk to Walt Samson. The
Dreams would come right back with a run in the fourth, then took the lead with 5 runs in the fifth. That is all Dreams
ace, Tom Farmer would need as he held Portage South to one run and 4 hits while striking out 12.

Portage South Has Tough Week, Drops 4 in a Row
After winning 9 of their first 10 games, Portage South faced the Akron Lasiks in a doubleheader.
In game one, PS trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh. Jesse Michel doubled and scored on a Mike
Darrah single. Darrah stole second and was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the game on a single
by Kevin Yelinek. Walt Samson allowed just 4 hits and struck out 9 in the loss.
In game two, the Lasiks scored 5 runs in the first and never looked back as they
went on to win 12-3. Michel went 2-3 with a run scored in the loss.
Portage
South would take on Team Diesel next. PS got on the board with 3 runs in the top of the third. Dylan Wartluft
doubled, followed by a Ron Spears single. Jesse Michel would then hit a 3-run homerun.
Team Diesel came back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The game would go back and forth with
it being tied at 6-6 into the seventh. Portage South did not score in their half of the inning, but Clayton
Watkins tripled with 1 out in the bottom of the seventh and scored on a Pat Havens single for the
win.
In the final game of the week, PS traveled to Mount Union to meet Alliance
White PT. Sam Crea singled in the first, stole second and scored on a Jesse Michel
single. Alliance would score 7 runs in the bottom of the first. The teams would each score a run the rest of the
game to make the final 8-2. The loss dropped Portage South's record to 9-5 on the season. Crea and Michel had
2 hits each in the loss.

Portage South Makes it 9 of the First 10
The Black Squirrels hosted B & B All Stars at Kent Roosevelt in game 10 of the season.
PS scored a run in the first when Sam Crea doubled and scored on a Ron Spears single.
B & B would score a run in the fourth and fifth to take the lead 2-1, but Portage South tied it in the bottom of the fifth.
Jason Preising reached on an error and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dan Hepler.
Preising scored on a Crea double. PS scored 3 in the sixth to put the game away. Danny Campfield
drove in 2 with a single and he scored on a Preising double making it 5-2. Jesse Michel picked up the
complete game victory on the mound. Crea and Spears led the offense with 2 hits each.

Portage South Gets a 2-for-1 against Team Diesel
Portage South traveled to Team Diesel to finish a rainout from earlier in the season and play
the scheduled game. Portage South held on to finish a 6-5 win in the suspended game. Eric Schaffer
came back and threw all 7 innings of the game for the win. In the second game, Schaffer started and threw the first
3 innings. PS went up 3-0 in the second and increased it to 10-0 in the third. The ended the game in five innings
with a 13-2 win. Schaffer picked up his second win of the day. Jesse Michel went 4-4 with 2 runs
scored. Dylan Wartluft was 2-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs.

Big Inning Helps Portage South Win
Portage South would meet Northern Ohio Hurricanes at Sisler Field. PS would score first with a big inning in
the third. They would plate 8 Black Squirrels in the inning. Sam Crea would start the scoring

Portage South Sweeps Doubleheader
Portage South traveled to Lake Center to take on the Canton Crew in a doubleheader. In the first
game, the story was Mike Darrah. Darrah threw the 6th No-hitter in the team's 14 year history.
He struck out 9 and walked just 2. PS got 4 runs in the third and never looked back. Danny Campfield
was 2-3 with 3 RBIs. Sam Crea was also 2-3 with a double for Portage South. PS won 7-0.
In game two, PS would get on the board in the first with 5 runs. Ron Spears
had a 2-run double that scored Sam Crea and Dylan Wartluft. Mike Darrah
had a single that scored Danny Campfield and Spears. Kevin Yelinek rounded out the
scoring with a RBI single that plated Darrah. The Crew would battle back and take a 9-8 lead into the seventh.
In the seventh, Wartluft singled and scored on a Kyle Campfield single. Jimmy Jamieson
followed with a 2-run homerun. Walt Samson held the Crew scoreless in the bottom of the seventh and
picked up the win. Jamieson was 2-4 with a homerun and 2 RBI. Wartluft, Spears and Yelinek also had 2 hits each.

Portage South Drops First Game in 2010
In the first complete game at home this season, Portage South lost to Alliance White PT.
PS jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third. Sam Crea walked and scored on a Dylan Wartluft
triple. Wartluft scored on Danny Campfield's double. Jimmy
Jamieson's sacrifice fly scored Campfield. Alliance got one back in the top of the fourth, but Portage
South pushed the lead back to 3 when Kyle Campfield scored on a sacrifice fly by Crea. Alliance tied
the game with a 3-run fifth inning. It would remained tied until the seventh when Alliance tacked on 3 more runs for
the win 7-4. Campfield was 3-3 with a 2B and a RBI. Kevin Haley picked up the loss on the mound
in relief.

Portage South Makes it 3 in a Row to Open the Season
Portage South scored early and went on to win their 3rd straight road game to start the season.
PS got on the board in the top of the first when Sam Crea and Danny Campfield both walked.
Crea scored on a Ron Spears single and Campfield was plated on a sacrifice fly by Jesse Michel.
Spears would score on an error to make it 3-0. The Black Squirrels got 4 more runs in the top of the second to push
the lead to 7-0. Kevin Haley walked to start the inning. Then Crea singled followed by Dylan
Wartluft getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. Campfield singled to score Haley and Crea. Michel
would also score 2 with his single. B & B All Stars would get one run in the fourth, but PS would win 7-1.
Walt Samson allowed six hits and 1 run in 7 innings of work for the win. Michel went 2-3 with 3 RBI.

Portage South Wins in 10 Innings
Portage South traveled to Woodridge HS for a game with the 2-time AA League Champs, Akron Lasiks. The
Lasiks scored a run in the first when Phil LoCasio singled to plate Kevin Brown. Akron
would increase the lead to 2-0 in the 5th when Jamie Matvey doubled home Ryan Petrusky.
The Black Squirrels got on the board in the sixth after Sam Crea walked, stole second and third, then scored
on a Danny Campfield double. PS would tie the game in the top of the seventh on an opposite field solo
homerun by Mike Haney. The game would remain tied through 9 innings. In the tenth, Ron
Spears would walk to lead off the inning for Portage South. Jimmy Jamieson reached after the
Lasiks tried to get the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt. The ball was thrown away and Spears advanced to third.
Spears scored when a pickoff attempt was thrown away. Haney and Jason Preising followed with walks
to load the bases. Kevin Haley earned a walk to score Jamieson for a 4-2 lead. Walt Samson
pitched a scoreless 10th to pick up a save. Dan Hepler threw the first 5 innings allowing just 4 hits
and 2 runs to the top scoring in the lead to this point. Mike Price gave up no hits in his 4 innings
of work for the win.

Rain Suspends PS Home Opener
Portage South played their first game at Kent Roosevelt HS, the new home of the Black Squirrels, against Team Diesel.
Diesel got on the board with a run in the second. Mark Hayhurst singled to start the inning and scored
on a double by Pat Havens. PS came right back with 4 runs in the bottom of the second. Kevin
Yelinek doubled and scored on a Kevin Haley single. Dan Hepler and Jason
Preising followed with singles with Hepler's single scoring Haley. Hepler and Preising each scored on a wild
pitch. The game was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the fourth. Eric Schaffer threw 4
innings, allowing 5 hits and one run. The game will be completed from this point before the June 15th game at Ellet
HS.
Portage South Wins Season Opener
The Portage South Black Squirrels opened the 2010 Greater Akron Baseball regular season at Mount Union against
Alliance White Physical Therapy. PS got on the board first with a RBI single by Ron Spears that scored
Danny Campfield. Portage South would scored another run in the third to make it 2-0. It would
remain that score until the sixth when the Black Squirrel offense pushed 3 more runs across to open a 5-0 lead. Dylan
Wartluft and Campfield both walked to start the inning. Wartluft scored on a single by Jimmy Jamieson.
Jesse Michel followed with a single to load the bases. Kevin Yelinek had a RBI fielder's
choice to score Campfield. Walt Samson went 6 strong innings on the mound for PS, allowing just 2 hits
and striking out 6. Samson had a perfect game going into the fifth. Mike Price threw a scoreless
seventh, striking out 2. Michel led Portage South with 2 hits. New PS manager, Kevin Haley, earned
his first win.
