Portage South Announces 2016 Wall of Fame Class
The 2016 Portage South Baseball Wall of Fame class was selected in August with one former Black
Squirrels being honored. Mike Price was chosen by the PS Wall of Fame committee.
Mike Price began his 9-year PS career in 2006. He played his high school baseball at Chagrin Falls and college at
West Liberty. Price was a 3-time All Star selection (2007-09) and finished second in the League Pitcher of the Year in 2007
and 2008. He was first team All-League and PS Cy Young in 2007. Price finished his career
as the leader in appearances, wins, strikeouts and saves.
Five Black Squirrels Named All Hobbs Team
The Roy Hobbs/Greater Akron AA League Awards were announced and 5 Black
Squirrels were named to the All-League team. This year the team was selected by the Awards Committee.
24 players were selected for each division, American and National. Ron Spears, Phil Smith, Jesse Michel, Kevin Haley and Aaron Pinsoneault were honored for PS in the
2016 season.
PS Team Awards Announced for 2016
With the 2016 season now over, the Portage South Black Squirrels announce
the annual team awards. The PS MVP was presented to Phil Smith. Smith
had 30 hits, 31 runs scored, 12 doubles, 7 HRs and drove in 33 runs. His .390 average was second on the team only to
Ron Spears, who secured his second consecutive Stan Musial Batting Title. The PS Cy
Young was a tough selection this season, but Aaron Pinsoneault took home the hardware. Pins
was 6-2 with a 2.73 ERA. He had 68 strikeouts in 48 innings on the mound. The fourth and final award given out is known as "The Herb".
The 2016 Herb went to Jason Preising.
