Portage South Announces 2018 Wall of Fame Class
The 2018 Portage South Baseball Wall of Fame class was selected in August with one former Black
Squirrels being honored. Kyle Campfield was chosen by the PS Wall of Fame committee.
Kyle Campfield played 6 season with Portage South. He played his high school baseball at Tallmadge High School.
Campfield was a 2012 All-League and All Star selection. He was also second team All-League in 2011. His .342 career
batting average ranks tenth on the all-time list and hit over .400 in two consecutive seasons for Portage South. Campfield
was also known for his strong throwing arm and had 9 outfield assists in 2012 to lead the league.
Portage South Players Recognized at League Awards
The Greater Akron AA Baseball League Awards were announced in February and Portage South was
well represented. PS had 7 players nominated in the 5 award categories, with Ty Moorhead winning the
George Sisler Award. This is awarded annually to the league's top hitter. Portage South also
had 7 players placed on the League All-Star team. Moorhead, along with Ron Spears, Phil Smith,
Mike Darrah, Jesse Michel, Kevin Haley and Steve Swiger
were anounced as all stars for the 2018 Greater Akron AA Baseball season.
Portage South Award Winners Announced
With the 2018 season now over, the Portage South Black Squirrels announce the annual team
awards. The PS MVP was presented to Ty Moorhead. Moorhead had 35 hits, 19 runs scored, 9 doubles,
2 triples, and drove in 22 runs. Phil Smith hit .400 earning him his second straight Stan Musial Batting
Title. The PS Cy Young was a tough selection this season, but Steve Swiger took home the hardware.
Swiger went 2-0 in 12 appearances with a 2.66 ERA. PS added a Golden Glove Award for this season and winning this inaugural
award for the Black Squirrels was Ron Spears. The final award given out is known as "The Herb".
The 2018 Herb went to Joe Watts.
Greater Akron Baseball Hall of Fame to Honor 4th Black Squirrel
The Greater Akron Baseball Hall of Fame’s class
of 2018 will be inducted during a three-day celebration. Portage South Black Squirrel, Ty Moorhead,
was among the 14 new members and 5 special award winners to be introduced
at a RubberDucks game. The GABHOF recognizes individuals who have contributed to area baseball organizations as players, coaches, umpires,
managers, sponsors or boosters. The hall of fame gallery is located inside Canal Park in downtown Akron.
In addition to currently playing in both, the 35’s Roy Hobbs division
with the Akron A’s and the 18’s division with the Portage South team, Moorhead and his wife, Mallory, established
the TNM Sports Academy.
