2010 Portage South Team Awards

With the 2010 season coming to end, Portage South announces the annual team awards.  The PS MVP was presented to Jesse Michel for the second time in 6 years.  Michel had 28 hits, 14 runs scored, 4 doubles and drove in 16 runs.  He also led PS in batting with a .406 average, winning the Stan Musial Batting Title.  The team's Cy Young was awarded to Mike Darrah.  Darrah went 7-1 with a 2.07 ERA in 44 innings pitched.  He also struck out 52 batters and threw a no-hitter against the Canton Crew.  The fourth and final award given out is known as "The Herb".  The 2010 Herb went to Dylan Wartluft.

Portage South Announces 2010 Wall of Fame Class

The 2010 Portage South Baseball Wall of Fame class was selected in August with four former Black Squirrels being honored.  Mark Bonfiglio, Dan Herbert, Luke Kehres and Reggie Maguire were chosen by the PS Wall of Fame committee.

Mark Bonfiglio began his 4-year PS career in 2003.  He played his high school baseball at Bedford High School and was a member of the Kent State Club Baseball Team.  Bonfiglio threw the only perfect game in team history in 2005.  He is the record holder for wins in a season with 8 and ranks in the top ten in all career pitching categories for Portage South.  Bonfiglio was a 3-time All Star and was the PS Cy Young in 2005 and 2006.  He was named 1st team All-Greater Akron AA League in 2006 and 2nd team in 2005.

Dan Herbert started with Portage South in 2005 and played 4 seasons.  He played baseball at Louisville High School and Walsh University.  Herbert holds the record for hits in season and homeruns in a season.  He was selected to 3 All Star teams and was 1st Team All-Greater Akron AA League in 2005 and 2006.  Herbert was the PS MVP and Stan Musial Batting Champion in 2006.  He also led the league in hitting during the 2005 season.  Herbert is in the top 10 of all the PS offensive categories.  He also has a team award named in his honor.

Luke Kehres began his PS career in 2003 and played through the 2006 season.  He played his high school baseball at Southeast High School.  Kehres set the record for strikeouts in a game with 14 and in a season with 98.  In 2004, he was named NEO Class A League Cy Young as well as PS Cy Young.  Kehres was a 2-time All Star selection and named 2nd Team All-Ohio in 2004.  He finished his career in the top 5 of most season and career pitching records with Portage South.

Reggie Maguire played for PS during the 2002 and 2003 seasons.  His career with PS was cut short by a shoulder injury.  Maguire played his high school baseball at Ravenna High School.  He was selected to the 2002 and 2003 League All Star team.  Maguire was the 2003 NEO Class A League Cy Young.  He was named the PS co-MVP in 2003 and PS Cy Young in 2002 and 2003.  Maguire holds the record for ERA in a season with 0.88 (twice) and ERA in a career.

Portage South Gets 2 on All League First Team

The 6th annual Greater Akron AA All League Team was announced and 2 members of the Portage South Black Squirrels made First Team.  Jesse Michel and Walt Samson earned First Team All League honors.

Michel hit .413 with 26 hits, 4 doubles and a homerun.  He also had 14 RBI and 13 runs scored during the regular season.  Michel was in the top five in the league in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.  He finished third in the Frank Garcia MVP voting.

Samson was 6-2 with a save and a 1.87 ERA.  He threw 45 innings, striking out 44 batters and walking only 10.  Samson finished second in the Dave Young Pitcher of the Year voting by only one vote.

PS also got 4 players on Second Team.  Sam Crea, Mike Darrah, Ron Spears and Dylan Wartluft were named to the Second Team All League.  Danny Campfield and Jimmy Jamieson were Honorable Mention.

Portage South Has 7 Make the All Star Team

The selection for the 2010 Greater Akron AA League All Star team was made and 7 members of Portage South were chosen.  The AA All Stars were taking on the Canton Stallions.  Danny Campfield, Sam Crea, Mike Darrah, Jimmy Jamieson, Jesse Michel, Walt Samson and Ron Spears.  Michel got the start in left field and Spears started at 3B.  Campfield, Crea and Jamieson were injured and unable to attend.  Darrah and Samson were coming off pitching performances and not able to participate.

2010 Brings New Faces to Portage South

There have been a lot of changes to the team makeup of the Greater Akron AA League in 2010.  Sharon Center Cox Painting, Randolph Reds and Canton-Akron Legend no longer have teams in the league.  Portage South signed 10 new players for the 2010 season and most of them came from the teams that disbanded.  PS picked up Sam Crea, Ryan Hartzell, Walt Samson, Ron Spears, John Ventura and Kevin Yelinek from Sharon.  They also brought back Mike Haney.  The Black Squirrels also signed Dan Hepler and Dylan Wartluft from the Randolph Reds.  The lone rookie signing in 2010 is Kyle Campfield, brother of 2009 League MVP, Danny Campfield.

Sam Crea was the 2008 Frank Garcia MVP and 2006 Dave Layton Tournament MVP.  He was named 1st team Greater Akron AA League in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.  Sam was named to 4 Greater Akron AA League All Stars games as a starter (2005-2008).  He was named to the Buckeye Baseball 18+ All Tournament team in 2006.  In his 2008 MVP season, he led the league in hitting (.508), hits (40) and stolen bases (30).  Crea also led the league is stolen bases in 2006 and 2007 along with being the homerun leader in 2005.  He played his college baseball at Kent State.

Ryan Hartzell played his first year in the Greater Akron AA League in 2009.  He made 4 starts, throwing 26 innings and striking out 32 while walking just 5.  Ryan was a 2009 Greater Akron AA League All Star and named honorable mention All League.  He threw in the Canton Class A League for the Canton Stallions prior to that.  Hartzell played for the Washington Wildthings and Florence Freedom in the Frontier League in 2004.  He played his college baseball at Ashland.

Walt Samson was the 2005 Dave Young Pitcher of the Year with the Akron Storm.  He was 1st Team All AA League in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and earned Honorable Mention All League in 2008 and 2009.  Walt was a 5-time All Star in the Greater Akron AA League (2005-2009) and named the starter in 2005, 2006 and 2008.  He led the league in wins with 7 in 2005, striking out 55 and walking only 4 that season.  Samson played his college baseball at Wooster.

Ron Spears was the 2007 Frank Garcia MVP.  He led the league in hits (33) and hit .465 in his MVP season.  Ron was named 1st All League in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.  He is a 5-time All Star in the AA League (2005-2009).  Spears was the 2006 Buckeye Baseball 18+ State Tournament George Sisler MVP.  He played his college baseball at Eastern Kentucky.

John Ventura was the 2002 NEO Class A League MVP and Cy Young.  He was named 2nd Team All AA League in 2007.  Ventura won the 2006 Buckeye Baseball 18+ State Tournament Phil Niekro Pitcher Award.  He played his college baseball at Walsh.

Kevin Yelinek was the 2003 NEO Class A League MVP.  He was 1st Team All League in 2006 and 2nd Team in 2005.  Kevin was named to the 2006 Buckeye Baseball 18+ All Tournament Team.  He was a 4-Time Greater Akron AA League All Star starter (2005-2008).  Yelinek played his college baseball at Akron.

Dan Hepler was the 2007 Dave Young Pitcher of the Year and the 2007 Dave Layton Tournament MVP.  He led the league in wins (7) and strikeouts (52) in 2007.  Hepler earned Buckeye Baseball 18+ All Tournament Team in 2007.  He was also 1st Team All League in 2007 and Honorable Mention in 2006 and 2009.  Dan was selected to 3 All Star teams (2006, 2007, 2009) with the Greater Akron AA League.  He played his college baseball at Rio Grande.

Dylan Wartluft was 2nd Team All Greater Akron AA League in 2009.  He was also George Sisler MVP of the 2009 Wood Bat Classic tournament.  Dylan hit .588 with 10 RBI in 6 games at the Wood Bat Classic.  He plays his college baseball at Marietta.
