Schaffer and 6 others Honored by NEO Roy Hobbs
2019 was a good year for many Portage South Black Squirrels, but Eric Schaffer
had a season on the mound that caught the eye of the NEO Roy Hobbs Baseball League. On Monday, January 20th, the league
announced the 2019 season award winners for the Greater Akron AA division. Schaffer was named Dave Young Pitcher of
the Year. He went 7-0 in the regular season in 10 appearances (6 of them starts). His 1.08 ERA over 39 innings
pitched led Portage South in that category. Schaffer is the 5th Black Squirrel to win the Pitcher of the Year honor.
The League All-Stars were also announced and 6 Portage South Black Squirrels were honored.
Schaffer, along with Ty Moorhead, Ron Spears, Kevin Haley, Phil
Kaderle, Justin Nelson and Jason Priesing were selected as the 2019 NEO Roy
Hobbs Greater Akron AA All-Stars.
Portage South Announces Team Awards
With the 2019 season now over, the Portage South Black Squirrels announce the annual team
awards. The PS MVP was presented to Ty Moorhead. Moorhead had 44 hits, 29 runs scored,
10 doubles, 15 stolen bases, and drove in 14 runs. Moorhead also hit, a PS season record, .518 earning him the Stan
Musial Batting Title. The PS Cy Young was a tough selection this season, but Kevin Haley
took home the hardware. Haley went 4-4 in 12 appearances with a 2.35 ERA. PS Golden Glove Award
for the Black Squirrels was Phil Kaderle. The final award given out is known as "The Herb". The
2019 Herb went to Jason Preising.
Frak Becomes 5th Black Squirrel in Hall of Fame
The Inductees for the Greater Akron
Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2019 were announced and Portage South's Dave Frak was selected.
Dave Frak grew up in Wickliffe, Ohio where he
attended Wickliffe High School. He was a three-sport athlete playing baseball and basketball and running Cross-Country. He received 8 Varsity Letters for the Blue Devils and was voted Male Athlete of the Year as a senior. His father was instrumental helping Dave to develop a love for baseball and was his
head coach until 12.
Dave went to Lakeland Community College and played baseball for two years. He then transferred
to Walsh University and played baseball for two years until he graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer
Science. He has won several MVP awards for the summer leagues in which he has played. In 2003, he began working at Progressive Insurance as an Applications
Developer and has been there ever since. Dave served as the Pitching/Assistant Varsity Baseball coach at Akron
Manchester High School from 2006-2014.
In 2012, he met his
wife, Jenifer, and they were married in 2013. Dave and Jenifer have three children Kinslee (10), Cole (5) and Carlee
(2). This summer will be the second year as the head T-ball coach for Cole’s team.
