Black Squirrels Earn League Honors
The Greater Akron AA League Awards were announced on Monday, January 18th with 6 Portage South
Black Squirrels earning league all star honors. The 5 individual league awards were also announced and Jonathan
Kountis was named the Dave Layton Tournament MVP. Ty Moorhead finished second
in the Frank Garcia League MVP. This was the 2nd consecutive year Moorhead finished second in the voting.
Lucius Ivory also finished second and was just 1 point short of winning Don Lombardi Rookie of the
Year. Last year's Dave Young Pitcher of the Year winner, Eric Schaffer, earned
the third most votes for this season. In addition to Kountis, Schaffer, Moorhead and Ivory, Ron Spears and
Jacob Caruso were named to the Greater Akron AA All Star team.
Portage South Announces 2020 Team Awards
With the 2020 season coming to an end, the Portage South Black Squirrels announce the annual
team awards. The PS MVP was presented to Ty Moorhead for the 3rd straight season. Moorhead
had 33 hits, 18 runs scored, 9 doubles, 19 runs batted in, and stole 7 bases. Ron Spears hit .475 with 28
hits this season to earn the Stan Musial Batting Title. The PS Cy Young was, once again,
a tough selection this season, but Jonathan Kountis earned the honor. Kountis went 6-3 in 11 appearances
with a 1.13 ERA and striking out 69 in 55 2/3 innings. PS Golden Glove Award for the Black
Squirrels was awarded to Jacob Caruso. The final award given out is known as the "Herb".
Jacob Caruso also took home the 2020 Herb.
