Portage South Wall of Fame Inductees
Ryan Border was a member of the original team in 1997. He played his high
school baseball at Field and was with PS from 1997 through 2003. He returned to the team in 2005 for a season and
again in 2007. Border ended his Portage South career as the all-time leader in games, at bats and triples. He
hit .306 for his career and is in the top five on the career list for runs, hits, doubles, homeruns, RBIs and stolen bases.
Jason Gorham was a member of the original team in 1997. Gorham played
at Southeast High School and Walsh University. His PS playing career was from 1997-2004. He played in 149 games
(6th) and hit .350 for Portage South. He won the team batting title in 2000. Gorham also represented the NEO Class
A League All-Stars against the Canton Class A All-Stars in 2001. He still ranks in the top ten in average, hits,
runs, RBIs, stolen bases and walks.
Nate Shahan was a member of the original team in 1997. Shahan also played his high school baseball at Field.
He played with PS from 1997 through 2000 and returned for a season in 2002. Nate finished his career with PS hitting
.394, which is now second on the all-time list. He still leads the career list in RBIs with 111. Shahan was co-MVP
and batting champion for Portage South in 1997 and won both the MVP and Cy Young awards in 1998. He was selected to
the 2002 All-Star Team.
John Stack was a member of the original team in 1997. Stack played his
high school baseball at Rootstown and college at Mount Union. He was the co-MVP and Cy Young of the 1997 Portage South
team. Stack owns a .353 lifetime average and set a record with 3 homeruns and 8 RBIs in a game during the 1998
season. He also is the holder of the season stolen base record with 25 in 1998. Stack is still ranked second all-time
in homeruns and stolen bases.
Ralph Bloom, IV began his career with PS in 2000. He played his high school
baseball at Hudson and his college baseball at Walsh University. Bloom has the career record for complete games and
innings pitched for PS. He also is in the top five all time in wins, strikeouts and ERA. Bloom was a two time
All-Star in his four-year career with Portage South, starting both All-Star games on the mound. He was also named the
PS Cy Young in 2000 and 2001.
Scott Hindel was a member of the original team in 1997. He played baseball
at Field High School and Malone College. Hindel played in 95 games in his four year career with PS. He ended his
career with a .307 batting average and is in the top ten all time in homeruns and stolen bases. Not only honored for
his contributions on the field, Hindel was also known as the spiritual leader of PS by bringing out the “caged animals”
within.
Chad Markert started in 1998 and pitched 5 seasons for Portage South.
Markert played at Lake High School in Hartville and Mount Union College. He was named the PS Cy Young in 1999.
Markert holds season records for appearances and saves. He also is among the career leaders in complete games,
innings pitched and strikeouts for PS.
Randy Wooten began his career in 1999 with PS. He played his high school
baseball at Bishop Hartley in Columbus and some college at Akron and Walsh. Wooten holds season records for batting
average, stolen bases and walks. He also holds the career records for runs, hits, stolen bases and walks. Wooten
was a four time All-Star and team MVP in 2002. He won the PS Stan Musial Award in 2003 and 2004. For his career,
Wooten hit .391 and ranks in the top ten in almost every offensive category.
Mark Bonfiglio began his 4-year PS career in 2003. He played his high school baseball at Bedford High School and
was a member of the Kent State Club Baseball Team. Bonfiglio threw the only perfect game in team history in 2005.
He is the record holder for wins in a season with 8 and ranks in the top ten in all career pitching categories for Portage
South. Bonfiglio was a 3-time All Star and was the PS Cy Young in 2005 and 2006. He was named 1st team All-Greater
Akron AA League in 2006 and 2nd team in 2005.
Dan
Herbert started with Portage South in 2005 and played 4 seasons. He played baseball
at Louisville High School and Walsh University. Herbert holds the record for hits in season and homeruns in a season.
He was selected to 3 All Star teams and was 1st Team All-Greater Akron AA League in 2005 and 2006. Herbert was the PS
MVP and Stan Musial Batting Champion in 2006. He also led the league in hitting during the 2005 season. Herbert
is in the top 10 of all the PS offensive categories. He also has a team award named in his honor.
Luke
Kehres began his PS career in 2003 and played through the 2006 season. He played his
high school baseball at Southeast High School. Kehres set the record for strikeouts in a game with 14 and in a season
with 98. In 2004, he was named NEO Class A League Cy Young as well as PS Cy Young. Kehres was a 2-time All Star
selection and named 2nd Team All-Ohio in 2004. He finished his career in the top 5 of most season and career pitching
records with Portage South.
Reggie
Maguire played for PS during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. His career with PS was cut short
by a shoulder injury. Maguire played his high school baseball at Ravenna High School. He was selected to the 2002
and 2003 League All Star team. Maguire was the 2003 NEO Class A League Cy Young. He was named the PS co-MVP in
2003 and PS Cy Young in 2002 and 2003. Maguire holds the record for ERA in a season with 0.88 (twice) and ERA in a career.

Nick
Dean began his 9-year PS career in 2001. He
played his high school baseball at Southeast High School. Dean played in 194 games for Portage South in his career, which
is 5th best in team history. He is in the top ten in almost every career offensive category. Dean struck out 14 batters in
a game against Manchester in 2001, which a PS game record. He was an All Star in 2001, 04, 06, 07, 08. Dean was also named
to 1st Team All AA League in 2006 and Honorable Mention in 2005 and 2008. He won the PS Stan Musial Batting Title in 2005
with a .442 average.
Brandon
Fedor started with Portage South in 2005 and
played 4 seasons. He played baseball at Crestwood High School and the University of Mount Union. Fedor was a finalist for
the Frank Garcia MVP award in 2005. He was 1st Team All AA League in 2005 at 1B and Honorable Mention in 2006 and 2008. Fedor
was selected as an All Star in 2005, 06 and 08. His 51 hits in 2005 is still tied for 3rd most in a season and .373 career
batting average ranks him in the top 5.
Jason
Hensley was a member of the inaugural team
in 1997 through 1999. He returned for the 2002 season. Hensley played his high school baseball at Rootstown High School. He
was a finalist for League MVP in 1998, hitting .491 (3rd best in a season) with a then record 3 homeruns along with 24 RBI.
Hensley won the 1998 Stan Musial Batting Title. His career was cut short due to a knee injury and still ranks in the top 10
for career homeruns.
Dannon
Svab played for PS during the 2001, 2002 and
2004 seasons. Svab was the PS MVP in 2001 and was a finalist for NEO AAA League MVP. He hit .417 with 7 2B, 2 HR and 23 RBI.
His 40 hits in the 2001 season was only the second time in team history of a player having at least 40 hits in a season to
that point. Svab left baseball to pursue his professional boxing career and then on to promotions for MMA Akron.
Greg
Boyd began his 5-year PS career in 2005. He
played his high school baseball at Rootstown High School and college at Mount Union. Boyd played in 125 games for Portage
South in his career. He is in the top ten in career batting for Portage South. He was an All Star in 2005. Boyd was also named
to 2nd Team All AA League in 2005 and Honorable Mention in 2006.
Jason
Cottrell was on the inaugural team in 1997
and played 4 seasons. He played baseball at Field High School and Mount Union. Cottrell was a member of 2 Ohio State Final
Four teams (1998, 2000). He held the record for homeruns in a season from 1997-2005. He hit .294 in 81 career games with Portage
South, but was best known for his defense. Cottrell had a career .979 fielding percentage.
Rob Gipson played with Portage South from 2007 through 2009, but had his career cut short by
injuries. Gipson hit .417 in his first year with PS while going 5-1 on the mound with a 1.91 ERA. In 2008, he set the single
season record for ERA with 0.37. He was selected to the 2007 and 2008 All-Star Teams. Gipson earned 1st Team All-League in
2008 and was honorable mention in 2007. He was the 2008 PS Cy Young and finalist for the Dave Young Pitcher of the Year. Gipson
threw a no-hitter in 2008 vs. the Turf Guys.
Eric
Jones played 9 seasons for Portage South.
He played his high school baseball at Louisville High School. Jones was selected to the 2003 & 2007 All-Star Team. He
was chosen 2003 Portage South team co-MVP and won the 2007 PS Stan Musial Batting Title. Known for his versatility, Jones
earned 1st Team All-Greater Akron AA League at 2B in 2006, 2nd Team All-League at 3B in 2007 and was named Honorable Mention
in 2005. He ranked 11th on the career batting list with a .335 average in 181 games and was 5-1 on the mound.
Bob Paradise started the Portage South baseball in 1997. He was the head
coach from 1997-2001, accumulating an 83-65-6 record. Paradise remained a coach for the team from 2002-2009 and played
an integral part in resurrecting the Greater Akron AA League in 2005. He served as Secretary/Treasurer for the NEO AAA
league from 1997-2004 and for the Greater Akron AA from 2005-2011. He was still playing and hitting infield into
his 50s and 60s.
Robert Paradise was a founding member of Portage South in 1997 and played 18 seasons. Over his career he played
all nine positions, including catching the only perfect game in PS history. Paradise earned an All Star selection in
2004 and made the All-Tournment team for the Wood Bat Classic in 2009. He finished his career with 249 games played,
third most at the time. Paradise was also the head coach from 2002-2009, taking over for his father. He compiled
a 179-104-4 record.
Marc Korogi was a co-founder of the Portage South baseball team. He played four in seasons and coached every
season of the team’s existence. Korogi was the co-head coach from 2002-2009 and served as league board member
for all three leagues the team has played. While managing the team, he had a record of 179-104-4. Korogi played
his high school baseball at Rootstown High School and ended his PS career with a .500 batting average.
Mike Price began his 9-year PS career in 2006. He played his high school baseball at Chagrin Falls and college at
West Liberty. Price was a 3-time All Star selection (2007-09) and finished second in the League Pitcher of the Year in 2007
and 2008. He was first team All-League and PS Cy Young in 2007. Price finished his career as the leader in appearances,
wins, strikeouts and saves.
Walt Samson played with Portage South from 2009 through 2013. He played his college baseball at Wooster. Samson
was a 4-time All Star selection from 2010-13. He was twice named PS Cy Young and was a 3-time finalist for league Pitcher
of the Year. In 2011, Samson set the PS record for innings pitched in a season with 76.1. Named All-League for
three consecutive seasons (2010-2012). He finished his career in the top five of almost all pitching statistics.
Kyle Campfield played 6 season with Portage South. He played his high school baseball at Tallmadge High School.
Campfield was a 2012 All-League and All Star selection. He was also second team All-League in 2011. His .342 career
batting average ranks tenth on the all-time list and hit over .400 in two consecutive seasons for Portage South. Campfield
was also known for his strong throwing arm and had 9 outfield assists in 2012 to lead the league.
Danny Campfield played with Portage South from 2007 through 2018. He played his high school
baseball at Tallmadge High School. Campfield was a 2-time All-Star selection (2009, 10) and All-Star Game MVP in 2009.
He was All-League First Team in 2009, 2nd Team in 2011 and 2012. Danny was the Frank Garcia MVP Award winner
and League Batting Champion in 2009. Campfield ended his career with season records for hits (56) and walks (27) in
a season. He finished his career in the top 10 for games, hits, runs, doubles, walks and RBIs.
Jimmy Jamieson played 10 seasons with Portage South. He played his high school baseball at Tallmadge High
School. Jamieson was selected to 5 straight All-Star teams 2007-11. He was the Don Lombardi
Rookie of the Year in 2007 and was named 1st team All-League 2007 and 2009. Jamieson was also
a Finalist for the Frank Garcia MVP award 4 times. He ended his career with a .379 batting average, including
3 season over .400, and in the top 10 in most offensive categories. Class of 2020#26 - Phil Smith, C/1B ('09, '11, '13-‘19)Phil Smith played 9 seasons with the Portage South Black Squrrels. He played his high
school baseball at Roosevelt High School in Kent and college baseball at Kent State and Northern Kentucky. Smith was
a 7-time All-Star selection and All-Star Game MVP in 2011. He was All-League First Team in 2011, 2nd Team
in 2009. Phil was a 2-time Frank Garcia MVP Award winner in 2011 and 2014. He was also George Sisler Hitter of the Year
three times. Smith finished his career as the PS leader in homeruns, batting average and slugging percentage.
